Braves continue to improve at Logansport Invitational.

As the golfers that make up the Maconaquah Braves got off the bus in Logansport on Saturday, the weather felt more fitting for a late season football game than an early season golf tournament. There were no complaints as 4 of the 5 varsity golfers play football in the fall (the fifth runs cross country) and were use to competing in trying conditions. Junior Captain Camron Metcalf led the Braves by shooting an 86. Camron’s round got off to a bad break after his opening tee shot kicked down a hill, leaving him no option but to chip out. Camron bounced back and played the next 5 holes in only 2 over par. Camron played smart, leaving his driver in his bag most of the day and focusing on hitting fairways. His 86 was good enough for a top 25 finish in a very competitive field. Freshman JT Dobbs, who was playing number 2 for Maconaquah, scored a 91, good enough for second on the team. JT was struggling off the tee due to the high winds, but played smart approach and chip shots to keep his round going. A few late bad breaks on the last two holes kept him from breaking 90. Junior Joe Butcher has been working hard on his game and that hard work paid off as some shorts were brilliantly struck. Even some bad swings, which is normal for someone working on their game, didn’t faze him as he played smart recovery shots. Only some short game miscues kept him from scoring better. His final tally of 100 was good enough for third on the team. Freshman Jayden Overdorf couldn’t overcome a bulky putter on the speedy and sloped Dykeman greens. As a testament to his ball striking, Jayden was on or near every green in regulation, but just couldn’t get any birdie or par putts to fall. A rough closing hole led to a 101. Junior Jakob Grant got off to a good start as he parred his first hole and barely missed an eagle on his third hole. However, as the winds picked up, Jakob struggled on approach shots and found it difficult to chip out of the lies he was left with. He finished with a 111. The final tally of 378 placed the Braves 13th in the 16 team field. The good news that the varsity team that was averaging 205.5 per nine hole match, shot 181 and 187 on the front and back respectively on Saturday. The Braves are back in action when the host the Logansport Berries at Rock Hollow As always the Braves appreciate the support of the parents, family and friends that come out and support the team each match.
