Braves Fall to Berries at Home

On a warm but windy night, the Maconaquah Braves lost a match to a very talented Logansport team. Logansport shot a 173 to Maconaquah’s 202. Junior captain Camron Metcalf was his usual self from tee to green, hitting long drives and accurate approach shots. However, his putter gave him trouble, as he missed several makeable birdie and par putts. His 45 was the best score for the Braves. Sophomore JT Dobbs struggled off the tee, which left him with challenging shots into the greens. He played smart, laying up when necessary and aiming for the safer parts of the greens. His 49 was the second-best score on the team. Fellow sophomore Jayden Overdorf was third with a 52. Jayden’s high ball flight was greatly affected by the wind, with well-struck shots often pushed off target. He also had several putts lip out or stop just short. Junior Joe Butcher, like Dobbs, had trouble off the tee as the wind pushed shots further offline than they would have been in calm conditions. Joe managed a 55, placing him fourth on the team. Junior Jakob Grant finished with a 56. It was a real boom-or-bust round for Jakob, as he alternated between high scores and pars. This pattern shows his talent but also highlights his need for more competitive rounds. Sophomore Zach Duke led the junior varsity team with a solid 52. Zach has been battling his swing for the past few weeks but managed to keep the ball in play most of the evening. Three bad holes were the difference between a score in the mid-40s and his final 52. He appears to be regaining his form, which is good news for the Braves. Sophomore Aiden McKinley handled the high winds well, scoring a 57. Aiden has a good swing and strong golf mentality. As he gains more match experience, his scores should continue to improve. Sophomore Clay Christopher continues to make progress, shooting a 63—an improvement over his previous nine-hole score. Clay played smart golf despite the wind, although some of his well-struck shots still found their way into one of Rock Hollow’s many water hazards. Freshman Owen Woolever had an off night by his standards. A very good ball striker, Owen struggled to find a rhythm, which affected his comfort and score. Still, as a freshman, he will learn and grow from the experience. Junior Drew Grigsby rounded out JV scoring with a 69, also an improvement from his previous nine-hole round. Drew has been working on both his swing and short game, and it appears to be only a matter of time before his scores drop even more. The Braves are back in action Thursday at 5:00 p.m. as they host Warsaw at Rock Hollow. As always, the Braves appreciate the support of all the parents, family, and friends who attend each match.
