It was going to be a challenge for the Braves to win on Thursday nights as high winds swept the course and the opponent was the 15th ranked team in the state, the Tigers ofWarsaw. Junior captain Camron Metcalf led the scoring for the Braves with a 48. He kept his driver in play, but the winds played havoc with his approach shots. Freshman JT Dobbs had trouble of the tee, but countered that with well thought out approach shots into the greens. Putting woes kept him from scoring better than 50. Junior Joe Butcher, one of the hardest workers on the team, started his round by playing very well. Unfortunately as the evening went on, he struggled to finish with the same scoring. His 52 was good enough for third on the team. Freshman Jayden Overdorf’s game is built on long high drives and approach shots, so the high winds affected him most of all. All this led to a 55 for Jayden. Sophomore Zach Duke has been fighting his swing for a few weeks and the conditions Thursday did him no favors. Well struck shots were followed by ones pushed off line by the winds. His final score of 58 put him fifth on the Braves. In the end, Warsaw beat the Braves 162 to 205 Sophomore Clay Christopher was the leading scorer for the Braves Junior Varsity team with a 62. Clay kept the ball in play and out of trouble, but his putter kept him from shooting a lower score. Three other junior varsity players all shot 63. Junior Jakob Grant had a challenging night in which good holes were followed by bad holes. Freshman Owen Woolever has been working on swing and the work has paid off as he hit some very good shots, but he also had some mishits that left him challenging approach shots. Junior Drew Grigsby played it smart off the tee and hit quite a few fairways, but his approach shots were affected by the strong winds. Sophomore AIden McKinley had a challenging night off the tee which led to even more challenging approach shots. His final tally of 68 was fifth best on junior varsity. The Braves are back in action on Tuesday May 6th as they play county rivals Peru and North Miami at Peru Municipal Golf Course. As always, the Braves appreciate the support of the parents, family and friends that attend each match. PHOTO: Sophomore Clay Christopher tees off on the second hole.
